General Statement of Duties
Performs work in the operation of a vehicle delivering and packing out product along assigned route as directed.
An employee in this class must safely operate a Tractor Trailer (compliant with all applicable DOT regulations); over a scheduled route to deliver products to assigned customers while meeting established delivery schedules.
Additional responsibilities include maintaining a variety of records, such as vehicle inspection reports, daily driver's logs and vehicle maintenance. In addition to inventories and inspects delivery tickets and products before departing for deliveries. Gives directions to and supervises assigned helper along route.
Driver maintains load temperature within specifications.
Drivers receive direction and route assignments from the dispatcher. Drivers are supervised by the Transportation Manager. Attends scheduled safety classes.
Illustrative Examples of Work:
Drives on assigned route to deliver dairy items, pastries, bread, and paper to various locations.
Assumes responsibility for care and maintenance of vehicle; Gases the vehicle up daily before departing plant. Performs Pre and Post inspection of vehicle. Completes Daily Vehicle Inspection Report and Daily log and turns in tickets to dispatch. Preparing accident and incident reports as necessary. Communicates effectively with dispatch reporting any and all incidents /accidents.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Working knowledge of the DOT and state rules and regulations involved in the safe and efficient operation of vehicle.
Knowledge of basic vehicle maintenance procedures.
Ability to:
• perform pre trip inspection (as required by Sec. 392.7)and submits report indicating truck condition
• Couple and uncouple of combination units (if applicable)
• Placing Vehicle in operation
• Use of vehicle's controls and emergency equipment
• Turning the vehicle
• Braking, and slowing the vehicle by means other than braking
• Backing, and parking vehicle
• Drive standard transmission and double clutch
• Deal effectively and provide superior customer service
• Operate Straight and/or Tractor Trailer.
• Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Maneuver hand truck.
• Perform Post Trip Inspection and complete Daily Inspection Vehicle Report.
• Complete Drivers Daily Log.
Physical Requirements:
• Heavy lifting
• Climbing in and out of Truck, 20 to 50 times daily.
• Occasionally twist/turn, bend, pull/push, climb, reach above shoulder
• Frequently sit, stand, walk and constantly Driving
• Performs duties in inclement weather including extreme temperatures
• Maintain valid, current DOT medical card
Desirable Experience and Training
3-5 years experience in the operation of large vehicles up to 80,000 lbs. (Tractor Trailer)
Special Requirements
Applicant must possess a valid CDL Class A driver's license issued by the State in which they are applying.
Must be 21 years of age or older, possess and maintain a safe driving record (MVR will be reviewed), ability to pass road test, safety test and math test.
Provide authorization for background checks; Employment Safety records as per DOT requirements. No violent offenders.
Must provide a completed Medical Examination Report for commercial Driver fitness determination and Medical Examiner's Certificate.
Must take and successfully pass a pre-employment drug test, as well as at random, reasonable suspicion, and post-accident drug and alcohol tests.
